A452 Practical Investigation
The OCR GCSE Computing specification requires some investigation by the students. It involves quite a lot of web-based enquiry, talking to IT professionals, reading and using books, or consulting the computing press. Some of the practical investigation assignments involve programming in a particular programming language like assembly language, client-side scripting language and web forms others do not require programming. The practical investigation tasks requires the demonstration of a wider understanding of computing in context -how computing has an impact in some other parts of life. Students should study one from a range of topics which will be supplied by OCR. Students will be expected to carry out practical investigations of the topic(s) and any supplementary research and necessary to complete these investigations. The tasks requires research, practice, practical activities, evaluation and wider comments. The last question in practical investigation task suggests a specific issue that should be commented on. Assessment is based on a report in which the topic is analysed, justified and evaluated showing evidence of the practical work undertaken.
For Unit A452 students will need to deal with new concepts and these will be introduced as a class activity before starting the controlled assessment task. Following this preparation, students will be introduced to the task through teacher led activity, then group activity and finally individual work on the task
This controlled assessment is to be taken under Medium Control meaning students must complete all work, with the exception of research, under informal supervision. Informal supervision means that the teacher must be able to authenticate the work as the students’ own unaided work.
